Jess Marshall
I identify with many roles: I am queer, I am genderqueer, I am a parent, and I have lived experience in non-traditional relationship dynamics. All of these experiences come together to inform not only my practice of psychotherapy, but also my understanding of the complexities of humanity and the uniqueness of every individual client that I see. My experience may not be the same as yours, but through collaboration, we can work together to help find the best treatment methods for your unique situation.
I practice as a Registered Counselling Therapist – Candidate (RCT-C) with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists. I live, work, and play in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded lands of the Mi’kmaq people. Though I am most commonly referred to with she/they pronouns, you may use any pronouns that feel right when referring to me, as my gender falls within the realm of gender apathetic.
I am trauma-informed and work from a queer-affirming, sex-worker friendly, sex-positive, kink friendly, and polyamory allied perspective.
My areas of focus include supporting clients with:
Treatment of Trauma
Gender and Sexuality
Personality Disorders
Attachment Issues
Neurodivergence
Anxiety and Depression
Major Life Changes
Non-Traditional Relationship Dynamics
Sex Positive and Kink Allied Care
Parenting
Postpartum Anxiety and Depression
In my personal life I enjoy spending time in nature, and my most recent hobby is learning how to grow herbs and vegetables in my garden. I was born and raised in the province of Nova Scotia. For me, it is always important to be near the ocean as I find it to be both powerful and calming. I am also a parent and spend a majority of my free time exploring and seeing the world anew along with my child. I spend the winter months enjoying the company of my two cats and pursuing other hobbies including knitting and reading. I hope to soon begin taking pottery classes as well.
I’ve been involved in creative writing for over a decade, with particular focus on poetry and short stories. Though my career drew me into the counselling profession, I remain involved with the local arts scene in their area. Currently my involvement in the arts centres around organizing activities associated performances, workshops, and panels with artists and educators at the annual Atlantic Sex Show hosted in Halifax.
I have a Bachelor of Arts with honours in psychology, a certificate in International Chinese Studies, and a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. I believe in life-long learning and I continue expanding my knowledge through ongoing continuing education.
I am available to see clients in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Nova Scotia.
